Academic Sections
Department of Medicine is made up of 12 academic sections, each with its own administrative structure. The sections are allergy and clinical immunology, cardiovascular medicine, digestive diseases, endocrinology and metabolism, general internal medicine, geriatrics, hematology, infectious diseases, medical oncology, nephrology, pulmonary and critical care medicine and rheumatology. Over the past 5 decades, these sections, through their clinical, educational and research activities, have gained national and international prominence. Most of the sections are now housed in the newly built center, a modern research and educational facility providing extensive laboratory, educational and administrative spaces. The proximity of our sections to Yale School of Medicine has facilitated extensive formal and informal research and educational collaborations with basic science faculty.
Educational Programs
Department of Medicine has had a long-standing tradition of excellence in training of practitioners, educators and/or investigators in the broad field of internal medicine as well as its specialties. Many of our trainees are now in leadership roles both here and abroad. As the largest department of the Yale School of Medicine, and the largest clinical service of the YNHH, the Department proudly plays a major role in the educational missions of both institutions. At the student level, the Department is actively involved in many pre-clinical courses and is responsible for highly successful inpatient and ambulatory clerkships as well as sub-internship. In addition we offer many clinical and research electives to our students. In postgraduate training, the Department offers 3 residency programs with support to many of our fellows during their research training. While the RWJ Clinical Scholar Program and the Investigative Medicine Program are based in the medical school, Department of Medicine has major responsibilities for the design and administration of these programs.
