Philosophy

This is the department that examines moral issues surrounding world hunger, abortion, euthanasia, and war...This is the department that debates God's existence...This is the department that lets you reflect on all your knowledge and consider the ends that it should serve......the department that probes the thoughts of the greatest minds on earth......the department that asks of life's meaning......the department that wants you to think, evaluate, and create.
Philosophy raises some of the most fundamental questions about our world and ourselves-questions about the nature of reality, knowledge, morality, God, and society. Students of philosophy study the thinking of major philosophers on such matters and learn to think critically and clearly on their own. In philosophy the student becomes the active inquirer, thinker, and solver of problems and not just a passive learner who memorizes ideas.

Since philosophy is the home of the study of logic and the principles of good argumentation, it lends itself well to being joined with virtually any course of study. Some philosophy majors pursue careers in business, journalism, law, medicine and education. In these cases students recognize that the successful practitioner is the good thinker and turn to philosophy to develop their critical and creative powers. Other majors develop an interest in becoming professional philosophers and enroll in some of the nation's best graduate programs in philosophy.

The department recently established on campus a philosophy dialogue room, a critical thinking lab and a chapter of the national honor society in philosophy, Phi Sigma Tau. We welcome and encourage all students to spend time with us in the department where they may converse with faculty members and fellow students, participate in philosophical dialogue in our dialogue room or read one of the many philosophical journals in the department library. Furthermore, the department sponsors varies speakers and hosts it own faculty lecture series.
