OVERVIEW INTERNATIONAL “BIKEATHON” 2010

Bikeathon/Jamaica Challenge Sunday April 18, 2010,
Whitter Village Centre,  Ironshore, St. James

• Theme/Objective: “Cycling for a Cause” – Education: The raising of JA$2,000,000.00 to establish a fund to provide ongoing financial assistance for young persons unable to complete their education because of a lack of funds

• First staged in 1995. An annual cycling event staged by the Rotary Club of Montego Bay East organized for cyclists of all categories. Recreational cyclists ride approximately 25 kilometres, while participants in the Professional/Amateur category will ride 90 kms. This year Bikeathon will again include a 5 kilometres walkathon and 5 kilometres runathon.

• “JAMAICA CHALLENGE”, is a two–stage race open to competitive cyclists of the Professional/Amateur category.

• Route / Course: start/finish – Whitter Village Centre, Ironshore, Montego Bay

“BIKEATHON” / Stage One – “JAMAICA CHALLENGE”:
Recreational riders will start after right after the Professional/Amateur cyclists to the Airport Round About and then east on an essentially flat course along the highway on Rose Hall Main Road. The course remains flat with a few slopes along a scenic route beside the hotels, the deep blue Caribbean Sea and the distant hills. Recreational riders will turn at the traffic lights at Sea Castles.
DISTANCE – 25 km.

Stage Two Rotary Cup
• Pro/Am cyclists will continue towards Duncans along the North Coast Highway with rising slopes and gentle descents through Lilliput a fairly flat course at Greenwood, through the district of New Falmouth over the Trelawny Marsh then ascend on a steep hill at Spicy Hill then descend into Duncans and turn at the Town Centre with headwinds and crosswinds all the way back to Montego Bay.
DISTANCE –90 km

• The Walkers and Runners will also start and end at the Whitter Village Centre head west to the traffic lights and turn left into Ironshore on Morgan Road, left onto Patterson, down onto Sugar Mill Road, left on the highway and back to Whitte Village Centre. DISTANCE – 5Kms

• Participants: Numbers fluctuate over the years; 800 are expected with at least 60 cyclists of the Professional/Amateur category. Children under 10 will ride the Parking lot at Whitter Village Centre and will not be allowed to ride the full “BIKEATHON” route along the main roads, UNLESS accompanied and supervised by a registered participating parent or adult guardian who has signed a liability waiver.

Pro/AM Entrants – Bikeathon $1000.00
Recreational Entrants – Bikeathon $1000.00
Children (under 10) – Bikeathon $500.00
Walkathon - $700.00
Runathon - $700.00
Celebrities / Special Invitees / - $15,000.00 contribution / individual sponsorship

Awards / Prizes: Championship/Sectional Trophies, Medals, Cash Prizes (Pro/Am), Special Awards.

Attractions: Sponsors Displays, Car show by Fidelity Motors, Remote Control Demonstration, BMX Stunt Riders, Brown Sugar
